The walls of the studio and how they serve as a meeting place for multiple nested realities . . .

My most current project, The space in the mind in the body in the space, is about the walls of the studio and how they serve as a meeting place for multiple nested realities of mind, body and physical space. Inner and outer topographies of the body, clippings, drawings and maps on paper lie close to the wall; internal organs sit next to boxes, a suitcase and other renderings of architectural space. Scale and depth are collapsed in the leveling matrix of photography, which like all the components contained within it, is also a container for meaning.

While I work, I take a picture of the evidence of the process with a large format camera that I keep at the ready. The immediacy of this type of image-making allows for synthesis and juxtaposition, bringing disparate elements and referents into proximity and dialogue with each other: varied strands of narrative having to do with family, my recent stroke and my relationship to my own body come into play with more abstract ideas such as the recurrence of blackness as a metaphor for the unknown and unseen. Boundaries and mapping are often on my mind, as is the notion that rooms, bodies and images are all containers for meaning.

During the weekend of Open studios, I will be showing the dummy for a forthcoming book of this body of work, along with prints from the series and some older drawings and photographs.
